Thank you for stopping by and learning a little more about the vision and mission of Dear Beautiful Brown Girl. I hope that our website is a place you will visit often. We are working to add additional features that can be enjoyed by Beautiful Brown Girls and Ladies who are looking for interesting content and feel good vibes.
I’ve been asked, “How did you come up with the Dear Beautiful Brown Girl concept?”
The truth is, it was a concept that began as a seed several years ago and grew into what it is now. It started in the classroom. I was recruited by the School District of Philadelphia in December of 1999. I’ve spent my entire career teaching in the Philadelphia area. I can honestly say that I’ve taught in every section of the city. The one thing that did not change, ever, was the need to empower and speak courage and love into my students. Students from every demographic, every background, every academic level, etc, had moments when they needed to hear that they were strong. That they were smart. That they deserved a great education. That they were leaders. That their voice matters. That being kind was important. That they had something valuable to share with the world. That their hair was perfect. That their skin was beautiful. That Black Lives Matter. That being smart is cool. I could go on and on.
“Affirming my students self-worth is embedded in my classroom instruction and just as important as teaching reading, math, writing, and all of the other subject areas.”
Dear Beautiful Brown Girl provides young girls with tools and resources that affirm their self-worth. When developing this organization, my primary focus was the Dear Beautiful Brown Girl’s Four Core Principles:
- Develop a strong sense of self in young girls through affirmations and positive images.
- Establish and maintain healthy habits and routines to strengthen independence and personal success.
- Infuse young girls of color with a culture of literacy rich experiences through quality works that celebrate diversity.
- Provide platforms that encourage young girls to find and use their voice to affect change and build positive community relationships.
Everything that DBBG does will focus on one or more of our Core Principals. The beauty of this organization is that I get to infuse three things that I am very passionate about into one – I love to teach and look forward to presenting our empowerment workshop series. I am an author and look forward to adding quality books and writing new stories and books that will be available with the launch of our Dear Beautiful Brown Girl Collections. I enjoy developing and creating new products that capture the mission of Dear Beautiful Brown Girl.
We launched our first initiative The BeYOUtiful Brown Girl Project in May of 2018. This initiative focuses on all of our core principles. Primarily the BeYOUtiful Brown Girl Project is a customized and unique subscription box membership for young girls ages 4- 13. Each themed box is designed with high quality illustrations and products unique to the project. Each character is uniquely created to represent and entertain Brown girls of all backgrounds. Each character has a short story that is shared on our website and in our subscription boxes. The goal is to create a connection and “friendship” with our characters. We want our members to know our characters by name and to develop a familiarity with them. All of the items in the box compliment our characters. Not only are they high quality items that are durable and long lasting, they are relatable and enjoyable. All of our items can be collected and treasured as a keepsake.
We only send our boxes out every three months. We want our boxes to be anticipated. We want our members to look forward to the items they receive and have the opportunity to really digest and spend time with the products. Most importantly, we all know what happens when you receive too much of a good thing- we don’t want our items to lose their value or our message get lost in saturation. With that said, we also have time to really plan and develop our boxes.
